Going, Going, Gone..

Here's my sob story: I'm working 7 days a week between two jobs, plus going through the application process for grad school and trying to study for the GRE, in addition to making sure I enjoy the real world with friends, dinners, and social endeavors...

Unfortunately this is all is quite overwhelming and taxing on my sanity and spare time. I'm making the decision to go on a brief blogging hiatus while I figure things out, ride out the last few weeks of this never-ending work week, and make substantial strides towards grad school.

I have been able to keep my Tumblr blog going pretty easily since it's practically effortless and employs the wonderful 'queue' feature, so please feel free to visit for a pretty picture fix anytime!

I hope you stick with me through the rough patch and can join me again in the (hopefully) near future!! I love you allllll :)

*p.s. You can probably expect a post here and there, because let's face it, I can't stay away!

For spring accessories I'm really drawn to brushed gold. I bought these flats from Target yesterday on a whim, but now I can't get the color out of my head! I'd love to add these earrings from Shlomitofir's Etsy shop or the gold leaf headband from Urban Outfitters.

David DiMichele has become one of my new favorite artists I happen to stumble upon at the most unexpected times. You go looking for one thing, and discover something wonderful and entirely unrelated! This is an excerpt from his current current installation, a photographic series entitled Pseudodocumentation:

David DiMichele’s current body of work, Pseudo Documentation, is a series of large-scale photographs depicting grandiose installations in fantasy exhibition spaces. DiMichele creates this work by first building scale models of exhibition spaces, and producing original artworks in drawing, painting and sculpture mediums, which are sited in the spaces and then photographed to create the final works.

I love how exaggerated every piece is; I think that's what draws me in. I can imagine myself standing one of these pieces, absorbing its vastness. I like to be reminded that something is bigger than myself {which, on a sidenote, you'd think happens quite often considering I'm only 5'0!}; I find it quite humbling.

I mentioned a DIY project that I was doing a couple weekends ago, and here are the results! I took inspiration from a post a while back from Design*Sponge where Kat Geiger put a new spin on a family photo using an old thesaurus and cut out pictures.

I decided that I didn't want the brown background, so I white-washed mine and used a purple tree silhouette in place of humans. After 2 days of painting and drying, and hours of laboring over that tree with an x-acto knife, my project was complete and I'm thrilled with how it turned out!

I have a crappy point and shoot camera, so it doesn't really do the coloring justice, but you can just imagine it brighter, whiter, and more fabulous :)

I start my new job today, so wish me luck! I spend the first 5 weeks training, so I'm not too worried; I know my brain will snap right back into learning mode easily! 2. I got a full-time job! It's nothing glamorous,
but it pays well, offers benefits, and provides me
with much-needed stability. When you've been
holding your breathe for almost a year,
you forget how nice it feels to let it out!

I love the idea of taking something unsightly and turning it into a
creative focal point. If you're like me, you dread ill-placed electrical
outlets and ugly cables, which is why this idea is so appealing!

Not only are the clips cute, but they're functional, allowing you to
create a shape on the wall.

And speaking of creating a shape...

How great is that?! I actually love that you can see the mantel art
leading into the lamp.

Another great idea, especially in a child's room is hiding the cables behind
a picket fence:

Diane von Furstenburg's Resort 2010 collection was so colorful and flirty that I was so excited to see one of the dresses on Becki Newton in a recent episode of Ugly Betty. I wish I could have gotten a better screen shot, but I was struggling a bit! "Amanda" looked amazing in the dress and I loved the styling direction: tribal instead of the bows DVF presented with.

Do you feel Spring in the air? It's starting to warm up which means the snow has finally melted! I'm currently ignoring the prediction of flurries later on in the week. On a positive note, I became an official resident of Kentucky today! I haven't had a good drivers license picture since I was 17, so it was a relief to know that I'll no longer get funny looks when showing my ID. Fashion Week has made its way to London and I can't wait to see what a few designers have in store, like Burberry, Henry Holland, and Vivienne Westwood. Have a great week, friends! Snow, snow, and more snow! I feel like it's taking far too much time for the old snow to melt and the new snow is cramping my spring style. I've yet to go through all of the new Fall collections from New York Fashion Week, but I'm hearing that some are pretty outstanding, so can't wait to see what's out there! I'll have plenty of time this week to do that since I'm only working a couple of concentrated days: meaning I get to spend mucho money on becoming an official resident of Kentucky, applying for more countless jobs that I'll probably never hear from, and continuing the slow unpacking of my bedroom. Here's to a productive week!

Alexander McQueen, 1969-2010

New York Fashion Week starts today and the airwaves were a-Twitter with excitement to see what's in store for Fall 2010, but the baited breath of the fashion industry ended in gasp with the news of Lee "Alexander" McQueen's tragic death. He was found this morning in his London home after committing suicide. One can only assume the loss of close friend Isabella Blow in 2007 and the recent death of his mother February 2, 2010 had something to do with his demise. It saddens me beyond words to think of the fashion world without McQueen's art. Opera Chic said it best:

"More than anyone -- anyone, even John Galliano -- else in fashion, Alexander McQueen, who died earlier today in London at the tragically young age of 40, always made you feel unsure of what he would come up next -- he was always ready to surprise you.

The colors, the forms, always different and magic, so strange as to transform the world around them and take you to a different reality: looking at his clothes was like peering into a magic mirror.

Upon learning of his death, you feel sad -- you're choked up even if you didn't know him personally, because you feel as if fashion, and art, and the world are less colorful, and less magic, and -- quite simply -- just less interesting to look at now that McQueen is not around anymore."

Lee, you will most certainly be missed, in the worst of ways.
As exciting as this day started, it now ends in sadness.

Le Sigh

If there's any one person I could be for a day, it would surely be Charlotte Gainsbourg:
gentle demureness, impeccable style, and unbelievable heritage a perfect French girl makes.
Charlotte recently released her second album in which she collaborated with Beck, and I have yet to get my hands on it. Flaunt wrote a wonderful piece about Charlotte's inspiration and why this record is so different from her first.

"The Magnetic Resonance Imaging machinery engulfs the patient in alarming sounds that spin in circles, flashing past the ear drum, appearing above and below in almost marine-like fluctuations, as if replicating a life lived inside a clamourous alarm clock on the verge of malfunction-underwater."
"But with those sounds... when I first thought about putting them in a song, it was more about the energy and the wildness of it, and the disturbances, of course. But there was also something very agitated that I liked. It didn't frighten me. It wasn't to talk about that fear."

Waking up in a fairytale wonderland wouldn't be a bad way to start your day, especially if it meant leaving and coming home to this amazing architectural structure!

Green All About It

I've decided that I like little pops of green in the kitchen. I know that the color green is
considered an appetite suppressant, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing in a kitchen!
I find the color soothing, and the more relaxed I am, the more likely I will cook.
The math adds up to green = good in my kitchen!

Though I'm definitely not feeling the all-over green look, so this kitchen's OUT,
but I do love that little window, a lot!

Golden Globes Rundown

These lovely ladies were my favorite picks of the red carpet:

Rose Byrne is ravishing in Lanvin, and Sandra Bullock shined in Botega Vanetta.

Olivia Wilde {Gucci} and Christina Hendricks {Christian Seriano} showed off their amazing bodies in red carpet couture.

Marion Cotillard was perfection in Dior and Zoe Saldana impresses as usual in Louis Vuitton.

Head-to-toe styling, I'd probably pick Marion Cotillard as my favorite of the night, but Christina Hendricks knocks it out of the park for me! She definitely wore the dress, not the other way around and looked absolutely stunning. Are you ready for award season? It's just starting, and this red carpet tells me only more good things are on the way! Did I miss anyone that you loved?

Elizabeth Dye has been circling the blogging world for a while now due to her beautiful handmade wedding bolero jackets, and we've all been drooling. But wait! There's more! Now Elizabeth is releasing her Spring 2010 wedding dress collection lookbook and we have something brand new, and just as lovely, to talk about! Seriously, they're beautiful. What bride doesn't want a one of a kind dress, handmade, for less than $1000?! Really, you can't beat it and she seems to be sweet to boot. I've never been one for less-than-floor-length wedding gowns, but Elizabeth may have changed my mind:

Every dress is so delicate and feminine!

I'm a little obsessed with the model's wedding hair: the style and the feathery bit!
Now drum roll please......

I think if I were getting married tomorrow, I'd pick this dress, for sure! Isn't is amazing?? It's everything from the small embellishments at the waist to the sheer layers of the skirt to the strapless sweetheart neckline. The perfect dress {for me} is simple, yet interesting in the details. *Sigh* This is definitely one for the "Dream" files.

NYLON Magazine gave us a sneak peek of the spring line McQ by Alexander McQueen and it's to die for! Even though many fashionistas dream of wearing the The Claw or one of his insane, other-wordly creations, McQueen gives us all a chance to dabble is his creativity and clothing with his line McQ. It's completely McQueen and completely wearable!

I actually can't pick a favorite piece... loving the black and white dress for its draping, the silhouette of the blue jacket, the patterns that suggest some combination of stripes, polka dots, and animal prints, and really loving the black and white check reminiscent of his Fall 09 collection. Thoughts?

I stumbled upon Jesca Hoop and was pleasantly surprised... sort of. I think she has a great voice, an interesting sound, and a hell of potential. For me, Hoop is like a representation of a cross between Gwen Stefani circa 2000 and Lenka. Take a listen:

Now, the song starts out great! I got that flash of excitement when you think you've discovered your next song obsession, but was disappointed about 2 minutes in because I realized that my mind was wandering off.. thinking about the flurries outside my window.. my cat licking my toe... A great song shouldn't do that! I think the production of this song is where it fell short: it becomes monotonous and a bit boring half way through. By the time the song ended I was a slightly happy to be rid of the cacophony of sounds jarring my speakers. I'm intrigued enough to hunt down her album and have a listen because Jesca Hoop appears to be a force to be reckoned with, but I'm hoping the rest of the CD keeps my attention!

This Year I'll...

Every new year comes with new {or re-newed} convictions and resolutions on how to make this year better than the last. To be honest, I've never been a "New Year's Resolution" kind of girl, but I'm feeling differently this year! The last decade {Feels strange to be old enough to be cognizant of this statement..} has been busy: starting and finishing both high school and college, getting my first job, moving to a new city, fighting unemployment for 4 months, and holding down two jobs to pay the bills. Busy, or difficult? Both. I'd say 2009 was my watershed year, the moment I truly realized what it meant to be an adult, living on your own, and making your way in the world. It's really easy to get bogged down by the work grind and money problems, so that's where 2010 comes in: convictions and resolutions!

1. Take control of my life.

Yes, I'm a Type A personality, but this resolution isn't about controlling everything in my life, just the things I'm unhappy about! I hate that I've become that person who feels sad for myself about things that I don't like in my life, yet doesn't make a true effort to change. Whether it's exercising, crafting, blogging, or reading, this is the year where I take control and become an active participant in living my life instead of standing by and feeling helpless!

2. Get a full time job, with benefits!

I tell you what: making a living on an hourly {or two} position is hard!! I feel like I really understand how hard it is for some people now, and I can sympathize. I've always been a bleeding heart type, but when you realize you're one missed payment away from becoming homeless, you can't help but understand that you had no idea what some people go through. I gave myself some breathing room to be happy about just having a job and to let the job market bounce back, but now I'm ready to get back in the job-hunting game and I'm going for the kill!

3. Be conscious of what I'm grateful for each day.

Do you remember my horrible attempt at this resolution a few months ago? Probably not because I was so bad at it!! Well I haven't decided exactly how I'm going to document it, but it's a resolution, so I'll have to stick to it! Trying to blog it everyday was a bit taxing, so I may just take pictures and write it down each day and do a wrap up each week of my top 3 or 4 things. Really and truly be prepared to see more this time!

#1 is a pretty hefty and all-encompassing resolution for which I have a more detailed, personal list, but I don't think you want to see all of that. Considering I've never done this before, I'm satisfied with 3 solid resolutions!

So there you have it: My 2010 New Year Resolutions. Is it just me or do people seem to be buzzing with hopefulness for 2010, more so than most years? Perhaps it's because 2009 was so difficult for so many people, but whatever the reason, it does feel like change is in the air.

Welcome to the new year! Any good stories from the holidays? I'm sure there are, there always are! The new year officially means that 'the holiday season' in retail has come to a close, which I'm terribly happy about. Today is my second day off in a row and I'm a little afraid I won't want to go back! It's been wonderful, though, getting to do things at my leisure and be keeper of my own time. I hope your holiday break was relaxing and refreshing, because I have a feeling 2010 will be a big year, but more on that later... Happy Monday, friends, and do something great this week!

How was your holiday weekend?? My Christmas at home felt too short, but was very nice and comfortable. I like having traditions and sticking to them! The mall has been crazier than I thought I would be, but I guess now everyone has money to spend! At least most of them are happy shoppers :) This week has started off amazingly and will end much the same, I'm sure, with New Years on the way. One of my bestest friends is in town for the week and I get to see her as much as I want! What more can you ask for?! Love you, Ems!

Have you realized that it's less than two weeks until Christmas? If you have, then you're more on the ball than I am! I seem to have lost all sense of time these days. I only pay attention to my involved and erratic work schedule on a day-to-day basis, hoping for enough sleep every night! At least I have something to look forward to now, knowing I'll get to spend more than 24 hours at home for the holiday :)

I posted about the new label Eyola yesterday on Luxella, but I thought it'd be great for today's fashionable post. I'm in love with this designer!

This is quite possibly the best new label I've seen in a while!
"Eyola takes inspiration from the opulent style of the Victorian era with a contemporary twist.
Each collection takes the form of Octettes which comprise of eight individually crafted and
distinct designs each with their own personality. The number eight is relevant primarily as
the figure ‘8’ reflects the hourglass shape created by the Victorian corset."
How amazing is that concept??
Aloye previously worked under Alexander McQueen, so it's obvious why this label is haunting, beautiful, and meticulous.

I bet if you thought hard about it, you could probably guess what piece of digital delight I'm throwing up this week... Lady GaGa's new video for Bad Romance, of course!! Honestly, friends, I'm not the kind of person who gets starstruck or terribly excited over celebrities, at least not since I was 12 and fanatic for the Spice Girls. Until now. Lady GaGa rocks my socks and continues to blow my mind with every new song/video/outfit!

This song/video has been playing on repeat in my head for, oh, at least 36 hours now and has yet to get old. I don't see this obsession ending anytime soon, and I'm in for the long-haul! I hope you see the horrific creativity and beauty in this video that leaves the words psycho or genius on critics' lips... you're turn to decide:

p.s. The McQueen Claw and stiletto are to die for!! So amazing.

{Sidenote: it's a little strange how many different things she's promoting in this video... my count has 8 different product placements throughout the video: Apple iPod Classic, Parrot speakers by Starck, Nemiroff Vodka, HP beat Computer, Wii Remote, Carrera sunglasses, GaGa for HeartBeats by dr.Dre earbuds, and of course Alexander McQueen fashions. I've been trying to find ways to bring the fall season indoors, but in a minimal and tasteful
way. I'm not one for anything that looks too out of place with the current decor, which is
probably why I hardly ever decorate for holidays. I guess I'll have to get over that someday
in the future when family and kids enter the picture, but for now, I can be selfish! So what
have you done to make your home look like Fall/Thanksgiving? I bought a mulled cider

Sorry for the late start today! A day off from work usually means that I act pretty lazy the first half of the day, then head out and do my errands/whatever needs to be done the second half of the day. How was your Monday? Ok, so allow me to make a confession: I'm a "Twi-hard" {whatever that means... but I think it applies to me}. I love the books. I'm actually reading the series for the second time right now... yes, it's horrible writing, but Stephanie Meyer does manage to capture those feelings you have in your first love and it's oh so addicting! Hated, hated, hated the first movie, but I have renewed hope for New Moon based on the previews. So regardless of what your opinion is, you have to admit that this Harper's Bazaar editorial is rather breathtaking; so gorgeous!

Not a big fan of Pattison, but Kristen looks amazing here! That hair color is the best she's had and she's never looked so girly. Go here to read the joint interview. Well done, HB, and thank you for allowing me to indulge in my guilty pleasure!

Prabal Gurung's Spring 2010 collection is getting a lot of time in the spotlight, for good reason!

His sophomore collection was gorgeous, so it's no wonder celebrities are flocking to the newcomer. Gurung really knows how to make a woman feel flirty, yet sophisticated with an imaginative twist. My only suggestion to the lucky ladies above: Leighton, please lay off the shoe pom-poms when opting for a gigantic flower!

This week we're giving "Goodness" a true backbone and showcasing some amazing people!
The Floating Doctors are a small crew of 15-20 that will be sailing to remote coastal villages in the developing world to spread medical knowledge and fix some problems. The video gives you a little insight into the history of the group and what their plans are for the future.

Doesn't that sound fantastic?! There are a couple other videos from CNN and youTube, plenty of information, and lots of {future} pictures on their website if you're interested in learning more or keeping up with their progress. Also, they haven't set sail yet and are planning to do so on November 1st. Doesn't it just warm the cockles of your heart to hear about a person helping another person out of the goodness of that very same heart?? Get's me every time.
